Erik attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he received his BA in History with a minor in Spanish and Architecture. Upon graduation, he was invited to serve in the Peace Corps as an English teacher and teacher trainer in Cambodia, where he received his Open Water SCUBA certification. When he returned to the US, he was committed to making diving a part of his everyday life, so he enrolled at the Divers’ Institute of Technology in Seattle, Washington. After graduation, he worked as a contaminated water diver in Washington DC and later, as a commercial diver in Hudson Harbor, New York.
Erik was determined to use the skills he had learned as a diver to contribute toward the protection of our marine ecosystems, so he later enrolled in the Marine Biodiversity and Conservation program at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, California. During his time at Scripps, he participated in trawl surveys, learned programs such as ARC GIS and R, and volunteered in the scientific aquarium at NOAA’s South West Fisheries Science Center. Erik joined MTS after completing his Capstone Research project on the applications of blockchain technology for seafood assurance. He looks forward to cultivating a career as a steward for our oceans.
