Nikko Garoufalias

Marine Technician II

Nikko graduated in 2023 from the University of California, Santa Barbara with two degrees: a B.S. in Aquatic Biology and a B.S. in Psychological and Brain Sciences. While at UCSB, he gained extensive experience working in the field with the Santa Barbara Coastal Long-Term Ecological Research (SBC-LTER) group and the Miller Lab at UCSB. Here, he cultivated his passion for ecological research and gained invaluable skills both above and beneath the water necessary for learning about and protecting our ocean communities. Additionally, his time with the Mantell Student Fellowship for Environmental Justice and as a teaching assistant for upper-division courses within the department of Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology at UCSB helped him to further hone his critical thinking, analytical, and research skills. He is a Divemaster, SCUBA diving instructor, and AAUS-Certified Research Diver. He currently uses these skills to help inform his work as a Marine Science Instructor at Seacamp San Diego, where he teaches and leads students both in the field and in the classroom about the wonders of the ocean. Nikko is stoked to be a part of the MTS team and can’t wait to contribute to further protecting our marine ecosystems!
