Dr. Robert Mooney is a marine scientist with over 25 years of experience working on marine resource studies, monitoring, and mapping. He obtained his bachelor of science degree in biology at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and obtained his doctorate degree at the Centre for Applied Conservation Biology at the University of British Columbia. His experience has focused on eastern Pacific ecosystems. He has worked in challenging offshore environments including Alaska and British Columbia. He has worked in nearly every major bay and port from Seattle to San Diego. From his office in San Diego, he spends much of his time managing special studies to support environmental review and permitting of projects and regularly manages environmental monitoring and mapping projects for special status species and habitats.
Dr. Mooney’s focus areas include invasive species management, marine biological resource mapping of species and habitats such as kelp forests and seagrass beds, monitoring marine construction projects for impacts, and determining appropriate mitigation strategies for projects that impact marine ecosystems and special status species. He helped manage the team that completed the only successful eradication of a marine alga (Caulerpa taxifolia) and is continually seeking new ways to apply scientific principles to the management of marine biological resources.
