Seth Jones is President and Principal Manager at Marine Taxonomic Services, Ltd. Seth has over 20 years of experience working in marine and aquatic ecosystems in addition to a childhood growing up in and around the world of environmental science in the Pacific Northwest. In 2009, Seth took over management of MTS from his parents, Howard and Kathy Jones, and diligently applied his previous consulting experience to expand the business into unchartered fieldwork territory. Seth began his career in the benthic laboratory and has managed hundreds of projects studying benthic infauna at sites around the world. He has worked extensively in the Eastern Pacific, from Alaska to Baja California, managing sediment quality studies and performing surveys for marine mammals, eelgrass, and invasive species. His passion for mitigating environmental impacts and for creating solutions to challenging conditions is what has driven the MTS team into the fields of invasive species management and complex survey studies. He is routinely called upon for his dive experience which includes certification as a rebreather diver. He has performed numerous inspections and repairs of underwater infrastructure, confined space water tanks, and in his spare time, enjoys dive debris cleanup of various water bodies. In 2020, he co-founded a not-for-profit organization, Below the Blue, whose main focus is the environmental conservation of Lakes, Rivers and Seas through the removal of foreign debris, public education about the concerns surrounding this pollution, and the collection of data to help facilitate policy change and enforcement.
Seth and his MTS team are experts at providing high-quality services within challenging environmental conditions. Seth takes pride in his ability to quickly ramp up and complete complex large-scale projects on time and within budget. He has conducted marine fieldwork using a wide variety of sampling equipment for benthic infaunal, sediment and water studies. Seth has logged thousands of dives as a PADI certified SCUBA diver and has managed the operation of numerous vessels with a team size of two to operations with over a dozen on board in association with the field projects MTS has completed. He gets work done by rolling up his sleeves to lead by example and mentoring a dedicated and flexible team to feel empowered to succeed and grow. Outside of MTS, Seth can be found scrounging up rusty car parts or traveling around the world with his wife and business partner, Robin Jones, to widen his aperture of experience.
